Peanut Blossoms

OK, this is an old recipe, but it’s a good one. We didn’t realize Hershey’s Kisses were that old, but this recipe appeared in the Pillsbury Bake-off from 1957. The finalist who entered this recipe in the contest was Freda Smith. Apparently she didn’t win, but no one remembers the recipe that beat her. Guess Freda Smith got the last laugh.

Prep Time: 10 m inutes
Bake Time: 10-12 minutes

1 3/4 cups Pillsbury BEST All Purpose Flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup peanut butter
2 Tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 egg
Sugar
48 KISSES milk chocolates, unwrapped

1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F. In large bowl, combine flour, 1/2 cup sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, shortening, peanut butter, milk, vanilla, and egg; mix with electric mixer on low speed until stiff dough forms.

2. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

3. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately top each cookie with 1 milk chocolate candy, pressing down firmly so cookie cracks around edge; remove from cookie sheets.

Per cookie: 100 calories, total fat 5 g, saturated fat 2 g, cholesterol 5 mg, sodium 70 mg, carbohydrate 12 g, sugar 8 g, protein 2 g.

Makes 4 dozen cookies.
